Aegyptosaurus was a long-necked herbivorous dinosaur that lived in North Africa during the Cretaceous. Although it is less known than other sauropods, its discovery helped confirm the presence of giant sauropods on the African continent.

🧬 Evolutionary Transition

  • Role: It represents one of the many radiations of titanosaurs that dominated the ecosystems of Gondwana during the Cretaceous.
  • Relationship: It is a member of the clade Titanosauria, the last great group of sauropods that thrived until the end of the age of dinosaurs.
  • Importance: It is one of the few named sauropods from the famous fauna of the Bahariya Formation, which makes it key to understanding the composition of this ecosystem.

🦴 Fossils Found

  • Destruction: Tragically, all of Aegyptosaurus‘s fossils, along with those of Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus, were destroyed in 1944 when the Munich collection was bombed during World War II.
  • Relevance: Today, Aegyptosaurus is known only through the detailed illustrations and descriptions that Stromer published. Its loss is one of the great tragedies of paleontology, and only the discovery of new specimens could reveal its true anatomy.

👪 Relationship with other species

  • Dinosaurs: It coexisted with the super-predators Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus, and with the iguanodontid herbivore Ouranosaurus. It also shared its habitat with other sauropods like Paralititan, with which it probably competed for vegetation.
  • Reptiles: It shared the rivers with colossal crocodiles like Sarcosuchus and Stomatosuchus.
  • Amphibians: The waters were inhabited by frogs and giant amphibians like the temnospondyl Axelrodichthys.
  • Fish: The rivers were filled with giant fish, including the coelacanth Mawsonia and the freshwater sawfish Onchopristis.
  • Mammals: Mammals were extremely rare and small in this ecosystem dominated by giants.
  • Birds: There were no true birds, but the skies were crossed by enormous pterosaurs (flying reptiles) like Alanqa and Siroccopteryx.
